  • 1 bottle of Italian red wine
  • 2 oranges
  • 1/2 lemon
  • 6 cloves
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 100g caster sugar

Empty a bottle of red wine into a deep saucepan. Grate the zest of one of the oranges into a saucepan and squeeze in the juice.

Grate the zest of the lemon into the saucepan and squeeze the juice into too.

Dice the remaining orange into 6 segments and stud with a clove – place them in the pan. Add the cinnamon sticks.

Add sugar to taste, stirring it to ensure that it has all dissolved.

Pop on medium heat. Do not let it boil! As your mulled wine simmers away it will be infused with the flavours of the fruit and spices – so keep it going on a low heat and serve as and when you need it. At a Christmas party. When friends unexpectedly drop by. When you’re bored and home alone. Every day is a mulled wine day.

TIP: This is the cheapest way to make mulled wine without losing its distinctive flavour (in my opinion).
